Tanger: The Grand Stade de Tanger is set to be ready by the end of September, as it undergoes a significant transformation to meet FIFA standards in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The extensive renovation, costing 360 million USD, has redesigned all interior spaces, according to Moroccan official Amraoui.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Grand Stade de Tanger is now the second largest of its kind globally, following the Maracan in Brazil. It features a unique hybrid structure composed of half metal and half cable. Moroccan companies, with technical assistance from Germany, are carrying out the construction. As of May 2024, the project was still in the study phase, but it has since made substantial progress.
Omar Khyari, an advisor to the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), noted that the revamped stadium will significantly elevate Morocco’s sports infrastructure. He emphasized that the stadium, which will be among t
he largest in the Kingdom, is a crucial component of Morocco’s vision to enhance its status as a hub for continental and international football.
The stadium now boasts a capacity of 75,000 seats and has been transformed into a venue dedicated exclusively to football. The removal of the athletics track has brought spectators closer to the action, enhancing the atmosphere. The field maintains its dimensions of 105 × 68 meters with a natural grass surface that adheres to FIFA standards. A new monumental roof is being installed to cover all spectators, positioning the stadium as one of Africa’s most advanced.
The architectural redesign emphasizes both aesthetics and functionality, aimed at meeting the demands of major international events.
