Ali Aboutaam Presents One of the Most Important Early Greek Coins in Existence

Exhibition is on display at 6, rue Verdaine, Geneva, Switzerland.

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / ACCESSWIRE / March 17, 2023 / Classical masterpieces are on display by Ali Aboutaam of Phoenix Ancient Art at its main gallery, which is located in the center of Geneva’s old town. He is showcasing a variety of antiquities that combine artistic excellence, historical intrigue, and the enthusiasm of the famous collections that they once belonged to. Several of these artifacts have provenance as early as the 18th century and were frequently published up until the present.

Ali Aboutaam – Kraay and Hermer Potidaea Coin
Silver coin of Poseidon on Horseback, Potidaea (modern day Cassandrea), a Chalcidian city, circa 540-520 B.C.

Ali Aboutaam says: “I am excited to be holding in my hand one of the most important early Greek coins in existence: the coin is from Potidaea (modern day Cassandrea), a Chalcidian city in Northern Greece, which contrary to other Chalcidian cities, was founded by the Corinthians, not the Euboeans. It shows the earliest representation of Poseidon on horseback on coinage from around 540-520 B.C. We can see the letter ‘P’ under the horse for “Potidaea”, and Poseidon, holding his trident, is riding a very noble and archaic styled horse. This can be compared to the best of Corinthian black figure pottery, also dated to the same period. If we turn to the reverse, it shows a triangular incuse which is extremely rare on archaic Greek coinage, as it would otherwise typically be squared. This coin is in excellent condition, and as far as we know, it is unique. It had belonged to some of the most important collectors of Greek coins, including the Jameson collection, and has been published several times, notably in the famous Kraay & Hirmer book (Greek Coins) with a big enlargement. Kraay & Hirmer’s 1966 publication is an important reference for the most beautiful ancient Greek coins from private collections and museums.”

Alongside the exquisite coin of Poseidon is a lovely Hellenistic cornelian gem portraying the same god. The juxtaposition of the two miniature masterpieces from 400 years apart is extraordinary. And from 2000 years earlier, visitors can see an outstanding Cycladic marble idol among the display: a treat for contemporary creative tastes.

The exhibition is on display at 6, rue Verdaine in Old Town, Geneva, until the end of June 2023.

World Bank Strengthens Support to Morocco’s Education Sector

Washington - The World Bank (WB) approved US$250 million in additional financing for the Education Support Program in Morocco, adding to the initial US$500 million Program approved in 2019.

This financing is intended to support the Government of Morocco in delivering on a highly ambitious education reform agenda, the international institution said in a statement Friday.

The program includes expanding quality early childhood education services, supporting primary and secondary education teaching practices, and strengthening management capacity and accountability for better learning outcomes.

Since its inception in 2019, the Education Support Program has contributed to improving the quality of early childhood education, enhanced the capacities of the teaching workforce, and management capacity and governance, particularly at the regional level, the same source noted, adding that this additional financing aims to achieve more ambitious results for the sector while enabling accessibility and resilience of education more comprehensively and effectively in the post COVID-19 era.

"This Additional Financing supports the operationalization of the New Development Model (NDM), specifically, the Strategic Education Roadmap led by the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports. The roadmap uses a tripartite approach that includes students, teachers, and schools to deliver reforms with a tangible impact on the learning environment, governance, and ultimately on learning outcomes," said Jesko Hentschel, Country Director for the Maghreb and Malta at the World Bank, quoted in the statement.

The World Bank also said that this additional financing will allow for more ambitious goals related to assessing learning for better learning outcomes.

"This program will benefit 100,000 children enrolled in preschool units that will receive a quality label and will develop more professionally qualified teachers using innovative pedagogical approaches," said Louise Mengue Mvono, Senior Education Specialist and Program Co-Leader at the World Bank.

She cited as an example that 10,000 educators will complete a pre-service preschool training program, 10,000 an in-service preschool training and 12,000 new students will enroll in the 1st year of the 3-year specialized Bachelor of Education Specialty Cycle (CLE) program for the 2023/24 academic year.

According to the Bretton Woods institution, the additional financing also introduces an Investment Project Financing (IPF) into the Program, providing technical support to the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports to implement key reforms leading to better results in education.

"The program's strategic framework is based on strengthening human capital and supporting sectoral decentralization for clear accountability on results and service delivery," said Abel Bove, Senior Public Sector Specialist, and program Co-Leader at the World Bank.

Among the reforms to be supported by the Program is the contribution to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. In this regard, the Program will foster a change of mindsets, promote behavioral change, develop skills needed for a green economy transition, and ultimately contribute to people's resilience to shocks, the WB added.

"At the global level, the program aligns with the World Bank's strategic objectives by helping address learning poverty through multiple dimensions and supporting education system resilience and governance," said Kaliope Azzi-Huck, Senior Operations Officer and Program Co-Leader at the World Bank.

Morocco, ‘Key Link’ in Fighting Terrorism, Religious Extremism in Region – Italian Pundit

Rome - Morocco is a "key link in the fight against terrorism and religious extremism in the region," Italian pundit Marco Baratto said Friday.

In a statement to MAP, in the wake of the arrests made these days by the Moroccan security services of extremists affiliated to Daesh, the specialist highlighted the Kingdom's tireless efforts in the fight and prevention against radicalization and terrorism in Africa.

Baratto mentioned, in this sense, the opening in Rabat of the UNOCT Programme Office for Counter-Terrorism and Training in Africa, which is part of the vocation and commitment of Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to its home continent.

"Morocco is a model to follow," Baratto said, noting that the Kingdom's "multidimensional and integrated" strategy to combat radicalization is based on "clear" pillars and introduces "innovative" concepts, including the fight against radicalization in prisons and vocational training for prisoners who, once released, will be able to generate income and stabilize their economic situation, "often at the root of their radicalization."

The author of the book "the challenge of Islam in Italy between European constraints and risks of radicalization", published in 2011 and in which he highlights the uniqueness of the Moroccan model in fighting radicalization and promoting coexistence and interfaith dialogue, stressed the relevance of the restructuring of the religious field in Morocco and the role of the Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of Imams, Mourchidines and Mourchidates (religious preachers).

In order to preserve Morocco’s religious referential, based on moderation, openness and tolerance, and to protect the Kingdom against violent extremism, the Kingdom leads tirelessly, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, continuous efforts to immunize the religious field against any drift, he noted.

According to him, this commitment includes reforming religious education programs, ensuring an openness to other disciplines and cultures, qualifying imams, enhancing women’s role and improving their representation in religious structures.

On the security front, the strategy put in place by Morocco for the prevention and fight against terrorism and religious extremism, with the aim of eradicating this scourge that threatens not only Morocco, but the entire region, is based on vigilance, monitoring and prevention of malicious acts, he said.

Counter-Terrorism: Morocco Plays ‘Important’, ‘Essential’ Role to European and Western Strategies – French Expert

Paris - The arrests made in recent days by Moroccan security services of extremists affiliated to Daesh, engaged in realizing terrorist projects, show the "important role" that the Kingdom plays in the fight against terrorism, which remains "essential" to European and Western strategies, said the French expert in geopolitical strategies Jérôme Besnard.

These latest arrests and others operated well before testify to the "strong" mobilization of Moroccan security forces, for several years, in order to help secure the Maghreb and the Sahel by a coordination of means throughout the Kingdom’s territory, Besnard told MAP.

According to him, the creation of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) in 2015, the strengthening of international cooperation, especially with Spain, and the importance given to human rights in the 2011 Constitution contribute to a climate conducive to the success of very sensitive operations such as the fight against terrorism.

Moroccan Islam, moderate and open, with the centrality of the institution of the Commandery of the Faithful, is a "very effective intellectual bulwark against radical discourse," he said.

''The terrorist threat is far from being stopped in the world, especially in Africa and it is even likely that we are witnessing its extension," warned the French expert, arguing that Morocco’s role in the stability of the region is "intended to increase in the coming years to prevent the risk of contagion in the Maghreb."

The Moroccan security services have arrested, in recent days, three extremists affiliated to Daesh for their alleged involvement in an intentional homicide of a policeman on duty within the framework of a terrorist project. The security services also arrested another extremist, in Safi, for his alleged involvement in the execution of a terrorist plan, as part of an individual project to seriously undermine public order. These operations have once again highlighted the holistic strategy implemented by Morocco to fight against the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism.

Counter-Terrorism: Morocco’s Strategy Is Source of Inspiration for Other Countries – Mexican Expert

Mexico City - Mexican expert in international relations Román López Villicaña said that Morocco's effective, multidimensional and integrated strategy in the fight against terrorism can inspire the rest of the world.

This professor of international relations at the University of the Americas in Mexico City told MAP that the effectiveness and vigilance of Moroccan security and intelligence services, which have recently aborted two terrorist operations targeting the Kingdom's stability, testify to the relevance of the Moroccan strategy to fight terrorism and violent extremism.

Villicaña noted that this approach, which is mainly based on proactivity and full respect for human rights, should inspire other countries, which in turn face the terrorist threat, to eradicate this phenomenon.

He added that the tangible results obtained thanks to the Kingdom's strategy in this field underline that the Moroccan approach is not only based on the security component, but also includes several aspects, including religious, legal and socio-economic ones.

The expert also highlighted the centrality of the role of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, who prevents the exploitation of religion for illegitimate purposes and ensures a religious practice based on moderation.

The Mexican academician also praised the socio-economic programs, including income-generating projects, that Morocco is keen to implement to combat vulnerability and poverty, which, he noted, are among the main causes of the terrorism phenomenon.
