The head of the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, Moayad Shaaban, sustained chest and abdomen bruises after he was physically attacked by Israeli soldiers in the town of Deir Istiya, west of Salfi Nazem al-Salman, a local activist, said Israeli soldiers severally beat up the official and fired tear gas canisters directly at him and at participants in a peaceful rally held weekly in protest of the new settlement outpost that settlers are attempting to establish on the lands of Deir Istiya. The official was transferred to a hospital for medical treatment. On June 24, settlers, protected by soldiers, established a new illegal settlement outpost on Palestinian lands in the town of Deir Istya. Dozens of settlers reportedly broke into an area north of the town, set up two mobile homes and three livestock sheds, opened a dirt road, and extended water and electricity lines to the site. All settlements are considered illegal under international law.
