Rabat: The Gambia welcomes the commendable initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to build the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, a flagship project that will benefit West African countries, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad Sering Modou Njie said Sunday in Lungi, Sierra Leone.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, “We are honored to take part in the signing ceremony for the Intergovernmental Agreement on the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) project, which stretches from Nigeria to Morocco, thereby connecting our countries, the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),” the Gambian minister added in a statement to the press on the sidelines of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government.

On Sunday in Sierra Leone, Heads of State of ECOWAS member countries signed the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) governing the development of the Nigeria-Morocco African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP), an energy infrastructure project spanning nearly 6,800 kilometers designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria to Morocco, before connecting to the European gas network.

“It is a very important initiative launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. We welcome this development because our West African countries will benefit from this commendable project,” he pointed out.

Noting that energy is of paramount importance to the development programs of the countries concerned, Njie expressed his country’s heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to His Majesty the King, as well as to the government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco, for this highly appreciated and commendable initiative.
