Nador:On the directive of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan inaugurated operations at the first container terminal at the Nador West Med Port. This marks the initial phase in the development of the Nador West Med industrial-port complex, which has attracted an investment of MAD 54 billion from both public and private sectors.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the launch of the "East" container terminal by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan underscores King Mohammed VI's focus on enhancing national infrastructure. This initiative is part of Morocco's strategy to advance its economic transformation, creating new industrial and economic centers while establishing a globally competitive port infrastructure.
The "East" terminal, with a quay length of 1,520 meters and a draft of 18 meters, is set on 70 hectares and will handle 3.5 million containers by 2030. It is operated by a consortium of Marsa Maroc and Terminal Investment Limited, with an investment of approximately MAD 5 billion. The terminal will be managed for 25 years. Additionally, the Nador West Med complex will feature another terminal, the "West" terminal, with a capacity of 1.8 million TEUs, set to begin operations in 2027 with an investment of MAD 3 billion.
The Nador West Med complex also includes a general cargo terminal, a bulk cargo terminal, and a roll-on/roll-off terminal, with varying capacities and operational dates ranging from 2026 to 2028. A significant component is the energy hub, featuring terminals for liquefied natural gas and hydrocarbons, scheduled for completion by 2027.
The industrial-port complex is projected to generate 14,000 direct and 20,000 indirect jobs, especially benefiting youth. Infrastructure projects will connect the complex to surrounding areas, including a rail line and a highway.
The complex aims to enhance Morocco's position in international maritime trade and complement the Tanger Med initiative. It is part of a broader strategy to establish Morocco as a logistics hub, with projects like Dakhla Atlantique extending this vision along the Atlantic coast.
During the inauguration, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan was welcomed by several government officials and business leaders, reflecting the importance of this strategic development for Morocco's future.
