Rabat: Following an emergency meeting in Rabat, Morocco, FIFA has admitted to mishandling the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal and apologized for the errors. Despite FIFA’s decision to retract the proposal, UEFA has maintained its threat to boycott the World Cup, citing a lack of confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

According to France24.com, FIFA had offered its 211 member associations $40 million to support the proposal, which involved creating a commercial subsidiary to oversee major competitions and open them to private investment. The plan drew criticism for its connections to the Trump family, with reports highlighting Thrive Eternal, led by Joshua Kushner, as the main investment fund.

The proposal, rather than garnering support, sparked significant backlash within the football community. UEFA’s threat to boycott prompted Infantino to backtrack on the proposal, yet UEFA remains firm on its stance, demanding further assurances from FIFA to prevent similar actions in the future.

The con
troversy has also revealed internal divisions within FIFA, leading to the resignation of senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro and criticism from other officials about transparency issues. Despite backing from FIFA’s leadership, Infantino continues to face mounting criticism and calls for governance reform from various stakeholders, including European Leagues and CONCACAF.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and former football star Luis Figo have publicly criticized Infantino’s handling of the situation. Reports of Infantino allegedly promising Morocco the 2030 World Cup final have been denied by FIFA.

As the leadership crisis unfolds, Infantino’s path to a fourth term as president appears uncertain, with potential challengers like CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin emerging.
