French Senate Speaker’s Visit to Laayoune Marks Turning Point in Morocco-France Relations

Laayoune: The visit of the Speaker of the French Senate, G©rard Larcher, to Laayoune marks a major turning point in Morocco-France relations, said Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid. During a meeting on the occasion of Larcher’s arrival on Monday evening, with a delegation accompanying him to the largest city in the Moroccan Sahara, Ould Errachid expressed his great pride in this profoundly significant visit.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this represents not only a step toward highlighting the achievements and accomplishments made thus far but also a major historical event and an exceptional moment, marking a turning point in bilateral relations, he noted. This visit also reflects “our shared and resolute determination to concretely contribute to writing glorious pages in the new chapter opened by the Heads of State of both countries,” on the occasion of the state visit to Morocco by French President Emmanuel Macron at the invitation of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, he added.

Ould Errachid further pointed out that the historic partnership between the two countries is a unique model, praising the role of France, a permanent member of the Security Council, which has once again demonstrated its political wisdom and strategic vision by placing itself at the forefront of nations that have recognized that the present and future of the Sahara can only be envisaged within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.

In this regard, he stressed that France’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity “is a constant position and a firm commitment,” reflecting the growing international support for the Moroccan initiative of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty-a proposal that has been widely lauded by the UN and remains the only acceptable and just solution to put an end to this artificial conflict.

Furthermore, Ould Errachid underlined that Larcher’s visit to the Kingdom is evidence of a shared conviction regarding the importance of parliamentary cooperation in strengthening bilateral relations and expanding areas of partnership, while commending the significant achievements made by both countries.

Relations between the legislative institutions of the two countries will remain a dynamic space conducive to ambitious initiatives and an ideal platform for developing innovative visions, he emphasized, adding that the House of Councillors is committed to mobilizing all available mechanisms of cooperation and to fully participating in the various joint initiatives aimed at strengthening and deepening the privileged ties between the two institutions, thereby contributing to the consolidation of the reinforced exceptional partnership sealed between the two countries.
