IRES Releases Book on Moroccan Sahara’s Autonomy and Development

Rabat:The Institute for Strategic Studies (IRES) has published a new book titled 'The Moroccan Sahara From National Claim to International Recognition of Autonomy under Morocco's Sovereignty.' This book provides an extensive account of Morocco's efforts over the past fifty years to consolidate its sovereignty and enhance development in its Southern Provinces since their recovery in 1975.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the book, directed by IRES Director General Mohammed Tawfik Mouline, emphasizes Morocco's continuous commitment to sovereignty, shared development, and openness. It reflects the Royal Vision that asserts the unity and identity of the Moroccan Sahara as a cornerstone of national unity and a strategic element for Morocco's influence across Africa.

The publication serves as a reference framework, underscoring the role of the population in the Southern Provinces' development, highlighting their political and administrative integration, and the protection of their human rights. The Moroccan government has prioritized sustainable and inclusive development in the region, investing heavily to boost the economy and advance the green and blue economies.

The book recalls Morocco's efforts since independence to address the Sahara issue under international law, resulting in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797. Adopted on October 31, 2025, this resolution confirmed the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the sole credible solution to the conflict. His Majesty King Mohammed VI subsequently declared October 31 as Unity Day.

Comprising seven chapters, the book documents political, institutional, security, socio-economic, and diplomatic achievements in the region. It opens with the Royal Vision and covers historical events like the Green March and the role of the Royal Armed Forces. It also discusses the administrative integration of the provinces, development strategies, diplomatic efforts, and the role of the Sahara in African integration and international cooperation.
