Jardin Majorelle Unveils New Pavilion by Architect Salsabil El Ouazzani

Marrakech:The Jardin Majorelle has opened its second temporary pavilion within the gardens of Villa Oasis, offering visitors a new exhibition titled “Birds of the Jardin Majorelle Nouala, the Moving Shelter.” This innovative pavilion was designed by Salsabil El Ouazzani, the recipient of the 2026 Fondation Jardin Majorelle Prize.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the young architect’s design is inspired by the nouala, a traditional reed-and-thatch hut, utilizing locally sourced materials. This structure is described as lightweight and dismantlable, emphasizing simplicity and reversibility. It was conceived as a space for contemplation, inviting visitors to engage intimately with the garden’s lush landscape.

The exhibition hosted in the pavilion has been open since April 2026 and focuses on the various bird species that inhabit the Jardin Majorelle. It highlights the garden’s layered vegetation, ideal nesting spots, and water sources, which attract over thirty species throughout the year. The project benefited from the expertise of ornithologists and ecologists who contributed to its scientific accuracy.

The foundation’s press release noted the jury’s appreciation for the project’s material appropriateness, design precision, and seamless integration with the garden’s environment. The competition, which was open to Moroccan architects under 40, received 34 entries from various architectural schools across the country.

Madison Cox, president of the Fondation Jardin Majorelle, led the jury, which included notable figures such as Karl Fournier, Salima Naji, and Alexis Sornin. The pavilion, part of a biennial initiative linked to the garden’s centennial celebration, remains accessible to all visitors at no extra cost, transforming the site into a platform for emerging architectural talent.
