Lower House Deputy Speaker Meets with Mercosur Parliament President in Rabat

Rabat: Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri received the President of the Mercosur Parliament, Rodrigo Gamarra, and his entourage on Monday, marking a significant step in strengthening parliamentary relations between Morocco and the Mercosur bloc.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri emphasized that the meeting represents a fresh start towards a more dynamic and effective parliamentary partnership that aims to serve the interests of the peoples involved and reinforce the values of cooperation and solidarity among Southern countries. He highlighted Morocco’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy, viewing it as a crucial tool for enhancing dialogue between nations.

Furthermore, Fassi Fihri stressed the importance of enhancing communication and exchange between the Moroccan and Mercosur Parliaments. This could be achieved through mutual visits and the establishment of continuous dialogue mechanisms.

Rodrigo Gamarra, President of the Mercosur Parliament, expressed that his visit is intended to accelerate commercial cooperation between the Mercosur bloc and Morocco, which he sees as a gateway to Africa and the Arab World for Latin America.

The Mercosur Parliament, created in 2006, plays a pivotal role in supporting integration within the Mercosur, comprising Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Based in Montevideo, Uruguay, it includes representatives elected for renewable four-year terms and operates through ten standing committees and a Democracy Observatory, convening plenary sessions at least monthly.

In previous efforts to strengthen ties, the Moroccan and Mercosur Parliaments signed two memoranda of understanding in 2019 and 2022.
