Morocco Advances in 2026 Global Innovation Index

Phnom Penh:Morocco has improved its position in the 2026 Global Innovation Index (GII), now ranking 54th out of 139 economies. This marks an increase of three spots from the 2025 edition and an advancement of 23 spots since 2021, as announced by the Moroccan Office for Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC).

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Morocco has also achieved a significant standing among lower-middle-income economies, ranking 4th. The Kingdom has made notable progress in the intangible assets category, where it is now 11th globally, advancing six positions since the previous edition.

A key factor in this performance is Morocco’s strong showing in design filings by origin relative to GDP, where it ranks 5th globally, up one place from 2025. Additionally, the country has improved its position in trademark filings by origin, now ranking 16th, marking a six-place leap from the prior edition.

In patent filings by origin relative to GDP, Morocco stands at 58th globally, which is an improvement of four places compared to the previous year. The Global Innovation Index, compiled since 2007 by the World Intellectual Property Organization, Cornell University, and INSEAD, serves as a comprehensive tool to evaluate countries’ innovation capabilities across 80 indicators, including Institutions, Human Capital and Research, Infrastructure, and Creativity Outputs.
