Morocco and Italy Discuss Support for Sahara Autonomy Initiative


Rabat: Morocco’s Foreign Minister engaged in discussions with Italy’s ‘Support for Sahara Autonomy Initiative’ Parliamentary Intergroup, highlighting international collaboration efforts. Speaking to the press following the meeting, Ettore Rosato, coordinator of the delegation and Secretary General of the Azione Party, stated that the purpose of the visit was to reaffirm his group’s support for ‘the autonomy plan for the Moroccan Sahara’ as a ‘long-term peace proposal.’ He expressed confidence that an international resolution, under the UN Security Council’s guidance, could establish ‘lasting peace.’

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Rosato commended the development momentum in ‘the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom,’ acknowledging the region’s potential and existing infrastructure across various socio-economic sectors. This visit coincided with Morocco’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Green March and was part of celebrating 200 years of diplomatic and friendly relations between Morocco a
nd Italy.

During the visit, the Italian parliamentary intergroup ‘Support for the Autonomy Initiative in the Sahara’ also toured the Southern Provinces. They met with local authorities and elected officials and explored structural socio-economic development projects in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region. The delegation comprised seven members from the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic, representing both majority and opposition parties.
