Rabat: Narrow political calculations in Spain should not undermine the “positive and fruitful” momentum characterizing relations between Madrid and Rabat, Peruvian political scientist and former Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackay stressed. In a statement to MAP, in reaction to the clarifications provided by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the latest developments in Morocco-Spain relations, Mackay noted that some actors on the political scene in Spain are seeking to instrumentalize the regrettable events of last July, in a context marked by strong internal tensions, at the risk of affecting bilateral relations that have reached an “unprecedented” level.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this development, he added, is the result of sustained cooperation between Rabat and Madrid in several areas and constitutes one of the “strongest dynamics ever achieved between the two countries.” Hence, Mackay emphasized the need to preserve these gains from partisan rivalries and consid
erations linked to Spanish domestic politics.

Highlighting the Kingdom’s commitment to mutual respect and the rules of good-neighborliness that should govern relations between States, Mackay affirmed that Morocco rejects being drawn into disputes falling exclusively within Spanish domestic politics or being made a variable of adjustment in partisan confrontations to which it is foreign.

Mackay, in this regard, considered that the events of July should be addressed within the framework of bilateral dialogue and with the required calm, noting that Morocco has repeatedly demonstrated its firm willingness to contribute to their resolution, while ensuring that the quality of its relations with Spain is preserved at the highest level.
