Rome: Morocco is firmly committed to deepening collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to strengthen Africa’s scientific capacities in fusion energy, said on Wednesday in Rome, Morocco’s Ambassador to Italy, Youssef Balla.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Morocco has announced its dedication to enhancing its cooperation with the IAEA and other international partners to bolster Africa’s scientific expertise in fusion and related sciences. This commitment was emphasized by Ambassador Balla during his address at the IAEA’s World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) Ministerial Meeting. He highlighted Morocco’s readiness to support IAEA initiatives aimed at improving regional cooperation and knowledge exchange, particularly in Africa, which will enable the continent to become a significant player in the future of fusion energy.
Furthermore, Balla noted Morocco’s notable progress in education and research in plasma sciences, which is laying the groundwork for future exploration of fusion e
nergy. He underscored Morocco’s belief that the peaceful use of fusion energy could advance through increased international collaboration, especially through activities organized under the IAEA’s framework focused on fusion energy safety.
In line with this, Morocco is advocating, through the IAEA’s WFEG, for the establishment of skills training programs, particularly for developing countries. This initiative aims to strengthen scientific foundations and capabilities, facilitating the large-scale adoption of fusion technologies. Despite the nascent stage of fusion energy research in Africa, the continent possesses expertise in nuclear and plasma fields, with skilled professionals across various scientific disciplines, Balla added.
Moreover, Balla expressed appreciation for Italy’s initiative in hosting the Ministerial Meeting, which seeks to address the challenge of developing a safe, secure, and decarbonized energy source collectively. He also commended the IAEA’s pioneering role in creating a global framew
ork to enhance collaboration among stakeholders, with the goal of accelerating and supporting developments in fusion energy, which is poised to shape the future of clean, sustainable energy solutions.
