Morocco Earthquake: SOS Fake News

The earthquake that struck the Al Haouz province on Friday evening is the subject of several Fake-News reports. MAP sorts out the truth from the lies:

– Rumors are circulating on social networks about a supposed suspension of classes at various educational establishments as part of the national mourning period. FALSE.

This is false information, resulting from an erroneous or biased interpretation of the measures linked to the national mourning period. The departments concerned have not announced any such measures.

– Websites report that owners of public transport vehicles in Inezgane have significantly increased the price of transport to the town of Taroudant, which was hit by Friday’s earthquake. FALSE.

This is an isolated incident which has no connection with the consequences of the earthquake, according to the local authorities in Inezgane.

An individual insisted that the driver take him to Aoulouz, a town 40 km from the cab driver’s terminal, prompting the latter to ask for a supplement to the initial fare. A joint commission visited the site to investigate the situation.

– An image circulating on social networks attributed to a national news website an appeal to all Moroccans to leave their homes this Saturday evening for fear of another seismic tremor. FALSE.

It is a fake image to which the logo of the media in question has been added, and which has published no such information on its official websites or social network accounts.
