Morocco: Morocco and the European Union (EU) launched on Wednesday in Marrakesh a strategic dialogue to strengthen cooperation in key areas such as AI, digital infrastructure, and innovation. The dialogue was inaugurated by the Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fellah Seghrouchni, and the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, as part of the 4th GITEX Africa Morocco (April 7-9).
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the dialogue aims to consolidate the mutual capacities of Morocco and the EU through expanded cooperation, particularly in supporting startups, deploying secure digital infrastructures, and enhancing interoperability between systems. In a statement to MAP, Virkkunen said that the launch of this dialogue will generate tangible benefits for companies, startups, research institutes, and other digital actors.
She noted that this cooperation framework will particularly help strengthen links between the innovation ecosystems of both parties, especially in the field of AI, through increased collaboration between EU AI labs and Moroccan stakeholders, thereby promoting joint projects and knowledge sharing. For her part, Seghrouchni stressed the need for reinforced cooperation on secure digital infrastructure, digital governance, and interoperability, in line with the priorities of the “Morocco Digital 2030” strategy.
Alongside the launch of the digital dialogue, the two officials signed an agreement on AI ecosystems for innovation and the first operational implementation of this agreement. Additionally, four European supercomputing centers (BSC, CINECA, GENCI, and LUMI) signed a letter of intent with the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), which hosts the most powerful supercomputer on the African continent, Toubkal.
Through this framework, the Ministry actively contributes to the development of concrete projects, while embedding its actions in the ‘AI Made in Morocco’ vision, oriented toward sovereign, useful solutions tailored to the Kingdom’s economic and social challenges.
