Abidjan – Morocco’s pioneering experience and great strides towards developing sustainable cities and promoting circular economy were highlighted on Tuesday in Abidjan, during the second International Circular Economy Forum (EcoCir 2024)
‘Under HM King Mohammed VI’s visionary impetus, Morocco has actively been committed for so many years to transition towards sustainable cities and circular economy, integrating strategies aiming to meet contemporary environmental and social challenges,’ said Morocco’s Ambassador in Côte d’Ivoire, Abdelmalek Kettani, during a high-level panel held on this occasion.
This approach, Kettani added, is motivated by the fact that the Kingdom is facing major environmental challenges, mainly water scarcity, due to climate change and years of insufficient rainfall, and waste management, noting that the imperative of a transition to sustainable cities has become a political priority for Morocco, integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its public policies, particularl
y Goal 11, which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
The ambassador reviewed a series of initiatives and projects launched by Morocco to manage water resources, including the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Programme (2020-2027), which aims to accelerate investment in the water sector, improving governance and integrating non-conventional water resources, as well as seawater desalination projects such as the Casablanca plant, the largest in Africa, which uses renewable energy.
