Morocco’s Initiatives in Sustainable Agriculture Highlighted During World Food Day Celebration

Rabat: “The initiatives launched by Morocco, such as the Green Morocco Plan and the Generation Green 2020-2030 strategy, illustrate the significant potential for strengthening food security, supporting smallholders, and promoting sustainable agriculture,” Huynh stated during the ceremony celebrating World Food Day, themed this year ‘Hand in hand for better foods and a better future.’

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the ceremony was chaired by Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Marine Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests Ahmed El Bouari. The FAO representative in Morocco used this event to underscore the Kingdom’s leadership in sustainable agriculture and its commitment to developing climate-resilient agri-food systems.

Huynh highlighted the important role of young people in this transformation, emphasizing their involvement in innovation, the integration of advanced technologies, and the promotion of human values. He reiterated the four priority areas defined by the FAO: improving production, nutrition, the environment, and living conditions.

This year’s World Food Day coincided with the FAO’s 80th anniversary and called for collective action to eliminate hunger and malnutrition while strengthening food security. It emphasized the necessity of building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems by combining traditional knowledge with innovation.

Following the opening session, a scientific panel discussion took place, focusing on public policies supporting food security in line with the ‘Green Generation’ 2020-2030 strategy. The panel was attended by national and international technical and financial partners, professionals, public institutions, research and training establishments, and various ministry structures.

Discussions addressed sustainable and efficient management of natural resources, development of resilient production systems, innovation, promotion of local knowledge, social inclusion, and equitable access to healthy, sufficient, and nutritious food. Recommendations from this panel are expected to bolster the national momentum driven by the ‘Green Generation’ strategy, aiming to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, resilient, and value-creating agricultural and rural model.

Throughout the day’s celebrations, Morocco reaffirmed its commitment, in partnership with the FAO and all stakeholders, to ensuring every citizen has equitable and sustainable access to food.
