Morocco’s Upper House Engages in Strengthening Ties with Latin American and Caribbean Parliamentary Unions


Marrakech: Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors Mohamed Ould Errachid held discussions in Marrakech with speakers and heads of regional parliamentary unions from Latin America and the Caribbean to explore avenues for strengthening parliamentary cooperation and enhancing relations between Morocco and the countries in the region.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the meetings were held on the sidelines of the 4th Marrakech Economic Parliamentary Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions. Ould Errachid engaged in talks with Karla Gutiérrez, President of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN); Tomás Zambrano, Vice-President of the Forum of Presidents of Legislative Powers of Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico (FOPREL); Alfredo Pacheco, President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic and Acting President of FOPREL; and Rodrigo Gamarra, President of the Mercosur Parliament (PARLASUR).

The discussions emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the H
ouse of Councillors and these regional parliamentary organizations, focusing on promoting relations in fields of mutual interest. The dialogue also highlighted the need to enhance parliamentary political dialogue, exchange legislative expertise, and support initiatives aimed at advancing South-South cooperation, along with encouraging investment, trade, and economic exchanges.

The parliamentary leaders reiterated their support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom as a credible basis for resolving regional disputes. They expressed appreciation for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and commended Morocco’s efforts towards a pragmatic and enduring political solution based on compromise.

Additionally, the President of PARLASUR reaffirmed Paraguay’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its backing of the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty. The discussions also underscored Morocco’s role, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI,
in enhancing cooperation and solidarity among Global South countries, along with the Kingdom’s strategic initiatives aimed at shared development, stability, and prosperity.

The forum underscored the significance of the Marrakech Economic Parliamentary Forum as a vital platform for dialogue and the exchange of views, facilitating stronger cooperation between parliaments and economic and financial institutions globally. The event concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding to establish a permanent parliamentary forum aimed at strengthening cooperation in economic, social, and development domains, providing a framework for exchanging parliamentary and legislative expertise, and promoting a balanced South-South partnership based on mutual benefit and economic integration.
