NEW YORK: President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas met on Tuesday with President of the Republic of Maldives Mohamed Moizo on the sidelines of his participation in the meetings of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York.
During the meeting, President Abbas praised the Maldives’ supportive positions for the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people in all international forums, and its joining the lawsuit filed by South Africa before the International Court of Justice in the case of genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip, and the positions of the Maldives government in international forums.
The President briefed his Maldivian counterpart on the efforts made by the Palestinian leadership to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the withdrawal of the occupation forces from the entire Gaza Strip, and the entry of aid.
The President stressed the need to unite efforts to mobi
lize support for the Palestinian endeavor to obtain full membership for the State of Palestine in the United Nations, and to obtain more recognition of the Palestinian state, appreciating the Maldives’ vote in favor of the Palestinian draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly calling for an end to the Israeli occupation.
The President discussed with President Moiseo bilateral relations between the two countries, ways to enhance and develop them in all fields, and a number of regional and international issues of common interest.
President Abbas arrived in New York on Friday evening to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The President is scheduled to deliver the State of Palestine’s speech before the General Assembly next on September 26.
The 79th session of the General Assembly kicked off on Tuesday under the title: “Unity in Diversity for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development and Human Dignity for All, Everywhere.”
This session saw a historic
event when the State of Palestine obtained an official seat among the member states of the General Assembly for the first time during the opening session, in implementation of a resolution issued last May.
