Rabat Hosts 5th House of Representatives/Wallonia-Brussels Federation Joint Parliamentary Committee

Rabat: The 5th session of the Joint Parliamentary Committee between the House of Representatives and the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation was held on Thursday in Rabat, with the participation of several officials and parliamentarians from both sides.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami, stated that this session marks the beginning of a renewed momentum in parliamentary relations, bolstering the multidimensional cooperation between Morocco and Belgium within the framework of special political relations. This gathering takes place in an international context that emphasizes the need for dialogue, communication, and collective efforts to uphold the values of peace, democracy, and coexistence. Both Morocco and Belgium are seen as models of stability and cultural and linguistic diversity.

Belgium, particularly the Wallonia-Brussels region, hosts a significant Moroccan community, which is the largest worldwide relative to the geographical area. Talbi El Alami highlighted the community’s active participation in political, economic, social, and cultural life as a leading model of integration and inclusion.

During a session themed “Artificial Intelligence and Parliamentary Work,” Talbi El Alami discussed the challenges AI presents to parliaments, especially in the context of adopting laws to regulate its use. He stressed the importance of keeping AI under human control and ensuring the protection of privacy and personal data, as well as equitable access to AI for citizens. He urged the international parliamentary community to focus on formulating policy proposals and visions regarding AI use and its associated challenges.

On the topic of “The Protection of Children’s Rights,” Talbi El Alami outlined Morocco’s progress in this area. He noted Morocco’s early adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and subsequent reforms to strengthen child protection as part of policies enshrined in the 2011 Constitution.

Beno®t Dispa, President of the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, stated that the meeting reaffirms the role of Moroccan and Belgian parliaments in strengthening ties between the two countries. He emphasized that these assemblies give a voice to citizens and anchor bilateral relations in a democratic reality. The partnership between the countries was further strengthened by an agreement signed in October 2025, which focuses on cooperation in justice, economic development, and migration. The Joint Committee, created in 2003, provides a framework for exchange, collaboration, and dialogue among parliamentarians, supporting a long-standing and rich bilateral relationship.
