Rabat:The Royal Office has issued a statement underscoring the continued international momentum spearheaded by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, following widespread global acknowledgment of Morocco's sovereignty over its Southern Provinces. This momentum is also supported by the recognition of the autonomy plan as the sole basis for resolving the Sahara issue, according to Samir Belfkih, Minister of Territorial Planning, Urbanism, Housing and City Policy and Government Spokesperson.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the statement from the Royal Office, released on Friday evening, comes at a pivotal moment in the nation's history. It coincides with the upcoming first anniversary of Unity Day, established by King Mohammed VI after the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797. The resolution and the King's Royal Speech have marked a significant shift in addressing the Sahara issue, distinguishing between the period before and after October 31, 2025.
The Royal Office's statement is deemed historic as it ties the non-renewal of Minurso's mandate to the symbolism of Unity Day. This is perceived as a step towards the conclusive closure of the issue within the United Nations framework, especially since Minurso's mandate in the southern provinces is due to expire shortly.
Minister Belfkih highlighted the historical context of this development, noting that since the Green March in 1975, Moroccans have been steadfast in their resolve to maintain territorial integrity under their Sovereigns' leadership. Minurso, established in 1991 as part of a ceasefire agreement, is seen as a relic of an outdated context, and the autonomy initiative launched in 2007 marked a turning point, further reinforced by the United States' recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara in 2020.
The statement reflects King Mohammed VI’s strategic vision, characterized by a combination of patience, initiative, and diplomatic engagement, aiming to secure international support for Morocco's territorial claims while remaining open to a political solution that aligns with international law.
Belfkih reiterated Morocco's commitment to the ceasefire and the international momentum initiated by the King at both bilateral and regional levels. This follows the broad international recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its Southern Provinces and the autonomy initiative as the sole framework for resolving the Sahara issue.
He also mentioned the draft resolution proposed by the United States, which garnered significant support among Security Council members, reinforcing the international community's endorsement of the autonomy initiative. The government remains committed to the High Royal Guidelines, ensuring the defense of the Kingdom's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the development of the Southern provinces, making national unity a lived reality for Moroccan citizens.
