Royal Speech Calls for Judicious Parliamentary Diplomacy to Support Positive Momentum in Moroccan Sahara Issue – Lower House Speaker

Rabat – HM King Mohammed VI’s Speech to the Parliament on the 1st session of the 4th legislative year of the 11th legislature is a call to adopt a professional and judicious management of parliamentary diplomacy to support the positive momentum of the Moroccan Sahara issue, said the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami. In an interview with Moroccan news channel Medi1 TV, Talbi El Alami stressed that the Royal Speech also called to review the profile of the MPs representing Morocco in international parliamentary institutions, noting that the Directorate of External Relations and Cooperation in the House of Representatives needs to be strengthened by new executives to support its international advocacy.

He added that the Moroccan Parliament is a member of 18 multilateral parliamentary forums in Europe, Latin America and Africa, noting that Morocco’s participation as an observer or full member in these forums ‘enables us to defend the national cause in a sustained manner.’

He highlig
hted the qualitative evolution of the national cause in light of the support from permanent members of the Security Council, such as France and the United States, to Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, recalling that many other countries have supported the Moroccan Sahara in official statements, such as Spain, or by opening consulates in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla.

The Royal Speech also called for ‘ the fundamental elements underpinning the Moroccan position need to be explained to the few countries whose stances on the issue still go against the logic of law and history,’ through legal, political and historical evidence as well as spiritual arguments, he added.
