South Africa Secures Round of 16 Spot with Victory Over Zimbabwe in AFCON 2025


Marrakech: South Africa defeated Zimbabwe 3-2 on Monday at the Grand Stade of Marrakech in the third and final match of Group B of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, securing its spot in the round of 16.



According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Bafana Bafana opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a goal from Tshepang Moremi, before Zimbabwe equalized with a goal from Tawanda Maswanhise in the 19th minute.



After the break, Lyle Foster put South Africa back in the lead in the 49th minute. The Warriors drew level in the 73rd minute with an own goal by Audrey Modiba.



Oswin Appollis finally secured victory for the South Africans by netting a penalty in the 82nd minute.



In the other Group B match, Angola and Egypt played out a goalless draw (0-0), allowing the Pharaohs to finish top of the group with 7 points.



Thanks to this victory, South Africa finished in second place with 6 points and qualified for the round of 16, while Zimbabwe (1 point) left the competition.
