Accra:Togo has reaffirmed its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, endorsing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco. This position was articulated by a Togolese representative at the UN Fourth Committee, highlighting the initiative as “the most credible, realistic and pragmatic basis for achieving a definitive political settlement” concerning the Moroccan Sahara.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Togolese diplomat reiterated the country’s “full support” for Morocco’s ongoing efforts to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political resolution to the dispute. Togo also expressed approval of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which advocates for discussions based on the autonomy plan without preconditions.
The diplomat further emphasized Togo’s commitment to encouraging genuine efforts within the framework established by the Security Council to achieve a “definitive and consensual political solution” to the issue, respecting Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Moreover, Togo welcomed the establishment of several general consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla by countries from various continents, including Togo. These diplomatic representations are seen as evidence of the Moroccan Sahara’s increasing significance as a center for development, stability, and regional influence.
