U.S. Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara, Says Aymeric Chauprade

Washington: The U.S. reaffirmed support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara sends “a powerful message to the world,” French geopolitical scientist and former European Parliament member Aymeric Chauprade told MAP on Wednesday.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Chauprade emphasized that in a global context where geopolitics and economics are heavily influenced by President Donald Trump’s vision and his determination to maintain the United States’ leadership, this reaffirmation is significant. It encourages other states to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and to comprehend the Kingdom’s crucial role in the stability of the Maghreb and Western Mediterranean.

Chauprade pointed out that the recent reaffirmation by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during the visit of Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to Washington, highlights the importance of Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory. This includes the recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, which marks a significant development.

He recalled the recognition made during Trump’s first term, which has now been confirmed at the beginning of his second term. Chauprade noted that two key Security Council members, France and the United States, recognize the Moroccan Sahara and view the autonomy plan as a viable solution within that framework. This development is seen as a powerful signal to the international community and could lead to new successes for Morocco on this critical issue.
