UN Secretary-General Commends Morocco’s Excellent Cooperation with Human Rights Mechanisms

New york: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has praised Morocco for its exemplary cooperation with the United Nations’ human rights mechanisms. Guterres pointed to Morocco’s active engagement with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), as evidenced by letters sent on June 25, 2025, and July 2, 2025. These communications underscore Morocco’s commitment to maintaining a sustained and voluntary dialogue with the UN human rights system. The Kingdom regularly communicates information to the OHCHR and has hosted numerous UN mandate holders, several of whom have visited the Moroccan Sahara.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Morocco stands out as the country in the region with the highest number of visits from human rights special procedures. This reflects its openness and willingness to engage with international human rights bodies. The UN Secretary-General also acknowledged the significant work of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council (CNDH), particularly through its regional co
mmissions in Laayoune and Dakhla. These commissions are instrumental in promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms in the southern provinces, addressing complaints, and mediating conflicts.

The report further highlights Morocco’s positive interaction with thematic mandate holders of the UN special procedures. Through its open and ongoing cooperation, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to universal human rights values and their implementation across the Kingdom’s 12 regions, including the Moroccan Sahara. This approach enhances Morocco’s reputation as a credible and responsible actor within the multilateral system.
