UN Secretary-General Urges “Polisario” to End Ceasefire Violations

Rabat: UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres has called on the “polisario” to cease its violations of the ceasefire agreement following a series of attacks attributed to the group. Guterres detailed an incident that occurred on November 9, 2024, when a shooting took place in the town of Al Mahb¨s during civilian commemorations of the Green March’s 49th anniversary. Fortunately, no damage was reported.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the UN’s Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) investigated the scene on November 11 and found debris from four rockets merely 800 meters from a local market. This evidence left no doubt about the terrorist intent of the “polisario,” aimed at targeting civilians and population centers. The Royal Armed Forces successfully neutralized the attack.

The UN Secretary-General referenced a letter from Morocco’s Permanent Representative dated November 12, which highlighted the potential consequences of the attack and affirmed Morocco’s right to take necessary measures to protect its territorial integrity, in alignment with Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Guterres also condemned a previous attack by the “polisario” on June 28, 2025, involving four rocket explosions near a MINURSO site in Smara, with one explosion occurring just 200 meters from the facility. This marked the closest attack to a MINURSO location since hostilities resumed in 2020. The separatist group reportedly fired four 122mm explosive rockets during this incident.

These aggressive actions by the “polisario” endanger UN personnel and violate international law and Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2589 (2021), which classifies attacks on peacekeepers as war crimes.

In response to the recent hostilities, UN authorities have contacted the “polisario” to hold it accountable and reiterated their demand for an end to hostilities.

The UN Secretary-General also underscored a letter from the Royal Armed Forces to the UN, labeling the attacks as “criminal and terrorist” in nature by the “polisario” militia.
