New York (United Nations) – Speaker of the House of Advisors, Enaam Mayara, in his capacity as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), underlined, during a speech at the UN headquarters in New York, the commitment of PAM to supporting stronger and more influential multilateral institutions.
Speaking on the occasion of the Summit of the Future (22-23 Sep), Mr. Mayara renewed the determination of this assembly and its member parliaments to back the implementation of the commitments of this Summit, as well as those of the Charter for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations.
This commitment is aimed at supporting stronger and more influential multilateral institutions, in full respect of the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and commitments emanating from international law, he pointed out.
It is also about providing, in partnership with various stakeholders, effective responses to current and future challenges, such as food security and climate change, Mayara added.
These responses must also guarantee an open, free and secure digital space that is based on universal human rights, while taking into account the interests of future generations in national and international decision-making, he said.
Focusing on the challenges facing the Mediterranean region, Mr. Mayara mentioned the ongoing conflict in Gaza, calling, in this regard, for the voice of reason to be heard in order to put an end to the escalation, and to prioritize negotiations that can allow the implementation of international resolutions with a view to achieving a two-state solution.
The Moroccan official recalled the announcement by the PAM, during a high-level event at the UN headquarters in New York, of two concrete initiatives, namely the creation of a Permanent Parliamentary Observatory of the South on the development objectives, which will be based in Morocco, and a Permanent Global Parliamentary Observatory on the use of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Mr. Mayara co-chaired, on Saturday with the President of the 78th UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, a high-level event on parliamentary support for efforts aimed at restoring trust in multilateral governance.
Initiated by the PAM, this event was organized in partnership with the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and the Permanent Missions of Morocco and Italy to the UN in New York.
The Summit of the Future is expected to produce an inter-governmentally negotiated, action-oriented Pact for the Future with chapters on Sustainable development and financing for development; International peace and security; Science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation; Youth and future generations; and Transforming global governance.
The Summit, which was convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, began on Saturday with the adoption of a “historic” Pact intended to mark the path towards a “renewed and more effective” multilateralism.
