UPDATE: Arab League chief welcomes UNSC resolution on Gaza, Egypt’s foreign ministry considers it a necessary step to stop bloodshed


CAIRO: The Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmad Aboul Gheit welcomed today the resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the blessed month of Ramadan.

Aboul Gheit stated in a statement: “I welcome the Security Council’s recent adoption of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza,” adding that this resolution was long overdue, and what is needed now is for its implementation on the ground.

In the meantime, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, said the adoption of this resolution represents an important and necessary first step to stop the bloodshed, put an end to civilian casualties and allow the entry of humanitarian aid.

The ministry also called for the immediate implementation of the ceasefire resolution, which paves the way to addressing all elements of the crisis, affirming that it will continue its intensive efforts with international and regional parties to contain the Gaza crisis as soon as pos
sible.
