17th MEDays International Forum Kicks Off in Tangier

Tangier: The 17th MEDays International Forum, organized by the Amadeus Institute, commenced in Tangier under the theme “Fractures and Polarization: Reinventing the Global Equation.” This edition includes around fifty sessions focusing on major geostrategic topics, with a particular emphasis on the challenges, issues, and opportunities facing Africa and the Global South countries.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Amadeus Institute President Brahim Fassi Fihri highlighted Morocco’s evolving role as a power of balance and a central actor of the Global South, amidst an international landscape marked by significant political fractures. He emphasized Morocco’s progress under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, underscoring the country’s reliance on sovereignty, resilience, and solidarity.

Fassi Fihri elaborated on Morocco’s “open, firm, and pragmatic” diplomacy, grounded in its African, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and universal identity. This approach, he noted, has positioned Morocco as a hub of stability, dialogue, and co-development, enhancing its role within a Global South capable of influencing the world order.

Addressing the Moroccan Sahara issue, Fassi Fihri cited Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, as a pivotal development marking the autonomy initiative as “the only serious, credible, and realistic solution.” This, he asserted, is a testament to Morocco’s patient and consistent diplomacy, complemented by significant developmental efforts in the southern provinces.

The Royal Atlantic Initiative, launched in 2023, was also highlighted by Fassi Fihri as a strategic move placing southern Morocco at the center of a new space for integration, growth, and stability for Africa. He noted that the MEDays Forum, established 17 years ago, supports this dynamic by fostering dialogue, cooperation, and the pursuit of a more balanced global order.

President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, praised the visionary leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, which is reshaping South-South cooperation through royal visits, agreements, and developmental achievements. Barrow emphasized the significance of the Moroccan autonomy plan in regional dispute resolution and Morocco’s role in African stability and prosperity.

Liberian President Joseph Boakai remarked on the forum’s theme, urging reflection on Africa’s role in shaping its destiny amidst global uncertainties. Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre expressed gratitude to HM King Mohammed VI for advocating constructive dialogue and partnerships among Global South countries, praising Morocco’s strategic vision in diplomacy and continental cooperation.

Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, called for renewed solidarity in light of current global challenges, stressing the acute impact of these tensions on small states like Grenada, particularly concerning climate change. He advocated for strengthened dialogue and diplomacy as means to navigate global fractures.

Since its inception in 2008, the MEDays Forum has become a significant “soft power” initiative, aligning with Morocco’s proactive foreign policy under HM King Mohammed VI. This year’s edition features the MEDays Investment Summit (MIS), focusing on strategic investments in Africa and reinforcing public-private partnerships, underscoring the forum’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive development.
