NABLUS, Wednesday, May 31, 2023 (WAFA) – Israeli settlers today slashed the tires of heavy machinery that was working on road rehabilitation in the village of Madama to the south of Nablus, in the northern occupied West Bank, according to a local official. Ghassan Daghlas, an official in charge of the settlement file in the northern West Bank, told WAFA that settlers attacked workers who were working on rehabilitating a road to the south of Madama and slashed the tires of the heavy machinery they were using. Settlers also attacked another car with Molotov cocktails. In the meantime, a group of settlers attacked a house in the town of Burqa, northwest of Nablus, with stones. The attack was fended off by the town residents. Settler violence against Palestinians and their property is routine in the West Bank and is rarely prosecuted by Israeli authorities. Settlement is a war crime according to the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The presence of settlers in the Palestinian territories violates the basic principles of international humanitarian law, said Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor. ‘As they are responsible for settler violence, the Israeli authorities should put an end to double standards in dealing with events in the Palestinian territories and discourage settler violence by not protecting it,’ it said.
