During the COVID-19 situation’s monthly review (May 11 – June 7), the Moroccan official noted that after three months of low green SARS-CoV-2 community circulation, the virus spread moved to the medium orange level, especially in large cities.

Test positivity rate has increased for the fourth consecutive week, from 0.6% to 5% last week, and case reproduction index is now at 1.19, he revealed, calling on the population to resume wearing masks in closed or crowded places.

According to Mrabet, the number of new dangerous and critical cases admitted in the ICU services have not experienced significant increase, remaining below 20 new cases per week, or less than 1 per 100,000 people.

Accordingly, 62 patients have been admitted to ICU services in the last four weeks, while 47 have left hospitalization, he said, adding the the number of deaths remains at a low level, with a total of 10 deaths recorded in the last four weeks.

In relation to the genomic surveillance of the virus, he noted that the Omicron mutant is still dominant with the BA.2 sub-mutant and the beginning of propagation of the BA.5 sub-mutant, as well as low percentages of other sub-mutants.

Regarding the national vaccination campaign, the coverage rate of the booster dose reached 17.6%, with a continuity rate at 27.6%.

Although serious and critical cases and deaths have not increased to date, the epidemiological situation at the national level is no longer comfortable, he noted, stressing that the ministry urges people with low immunity in particular to receive the booster dose to increase the level of immunity.

The ministry also calls on citizens to resume wearing the mask in closed or crowded places, urging people with respiratory symptoms to wear a mask and stop any work or social activity while visiting health facilities for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
