This sporting event, placed under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, is held until October 02 with the participation of no less than 54 athletes of different nationalities, including 14 Moroccans, engaged in the strapless discipline.
In 12 years, more than 600 international competitors have come from the four corners of the world to share and discover the fabulous sites adapted to the practice of sliding in the sea, on flat water or on waves and have become true ambassadors of the destination Dakhla.
This year, they are from Morocco, France, Australia, Switzerland, Spain, Brazil, Canada, but also from the United States of America, the Netherlands, Cape Verde, South Africa, Germany and Reunion Island, who came to defend their chances during this stage initiated by the Association “Dakhla Lagoon for the development of sport and cultural animation” and the Global Kitesports Association (GKA), under the auspices of the World Sailing Federation (WSF).
On the sidelines of the official opening ceremony of this world championship, which took place in the presence of elected officials, officials and local actors, the president of the association Lagon Dakhla for the development of sport and cultural animation, Leila Ouachi, told MAP that the stage of Dakhla comes to crown the champion and the world champion in the strapless discipline .
This year, she continued, 14 Moroccan athletes will compete from this Tuesday to obtain two wild-card allowing them to compete in the final table, noting that the objective is to allow more Moroccan athletes to qualify for the finals and become champions in this discipline.
“The international athletes used to come here have become true ambassadors of Morocco and the destination Dakhla, in particular,” she emphasized, noting that the World Kitesurfing Championship “Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Kitesurfing World Cup” has undoubtedly contributed to the growth and development of the city of Dakhla in terms of tourism and economy.
For his part, Italy’s Airton Cozzolino, champion last year in Dakhla, expressed his desire to win again at this stage, stressing that all conditions are met to allow this edition to take place in the best conditions. “I look forward to taking part in this competition, give the best of myself and defend my title.”
“This is my first participation in the World Championship in Dakhla. It is one of the best places where you can practice kitesurfing,” said, for his part, the Moroccan athlete Badr Trichi, noting that his dream is to be among the best kitesurfers at the international level.
