Davis Cup Tennis: Morocco Downs South Africa 4-1 to Book Spot in World Group I Playoffs


Rabat: Already leading 2-0 after Saturday’s opening singles, the Moroccans sealed the outcome of the tie on Sunday following Talal Baadi’s victory against South Africa’s Connor Roig (6-3, 6-2). Karim Bennani then capped the national team’s commanding performance with a clinical 6-1, 6-2 victory against Leo Matthysen.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, in the doubles played on Sunday, the Moroccan pair of Yassine Dlimi and Younes Lalami Laaroussi fell just short in a thriller against Alec Beckley and Thando Longwe-Smit, losing 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.

On Saturday, Morocco got off to a good start, leading 2-0 after the first two singles fixtures of the first day. Morocco’s two victories came at the hands of Yassine Dlimi, who bested Alec Beckley 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, and Taha Baadi, who overwhelmed Marc Van Der Merwe 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
