Rabat: Following the recent events at the border crossings leading to the cities of Sebta and Mellilia, the Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that these occurrences are the result of several complex factors. These include the biased exploitation of digital space, the spread of misleading information, the activities of human trafficking rings, and the misinterpretation of legal data, which together fostered a false belief that accessing European territories could be achieved easily and without legal consequences.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Rachid El Khalfi, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, emphasized the proactive measures taken by public authorities in response to these developments. Authorities have implemented a comprehensive strategy focusing on early detection, increased vigilance, and the reinforcement of security services and local authorities. This approach has been crucial in controlling the situation, safeguarding lives, maintaining public order, and securing bor
ders, in compliance with legal provisions and proportional intervention principles.
El Khalfi noted that accurate statistical data, gathered from surveillance systems at departure points, revealed that approximately 40,000 individuals were headed for Sebta and around 1,135 for Mellilia. Those who reached Mellilia were subsequently returned. These figures are based on precise statistical and field data, contrasting with unreliable reports lacking objective evidence.
Attention was drawn to recent Spanish judicial decisions that potentially restrict the immediate removal of some intercepted irregular migrants. Misinterpretation of these decisions has contributed to attempts at irregular migration, specifically the belief that swimming to Sebta could bypass immediate return. El Khalfi reported that these events have resulted in one accidental death from a fall near Sebta and 10 drownings.
He highlighted that the short distance and shallow waters between the departure points and Sebta created a false sense of s
ecurity, leading some to underestimate the risks involved. The Moroccan authorities continue to verify reports of additional deaths in Sebta through cooperation with Spanish counterparts to ascertain the facts and take necessary measures.
El Khalfi also mentioned that the return of individuals has been facilitated through Spanish cooperation, allowing for voluntary returns and gradually restoring normalcy. The Public Prosecutor’s office is conducting criminal investigations to determine the circumstances and responsibilities related to these events.
The Ministry of the Interior reiterated Morocco’s commitment to managing migration through shared responsibility and international cooperation. Morocco remains dedicated to enhancing global efforts to combat irregular migration and human trafficking, ensuring public order and border security while respecting national and international laws.
