Cairo, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the current Arab Summit’s state of presidency, participated in a consultative meeting on enhancing coordination on peace initiatives for Sudan.
The meeting, held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, brought together representatives from relevant regional and international organisations, along with foreign ministers from countries leading key peace initiatives for Sudan.
In his remarks at the meeting, the Foreign Minister conveyed the greetings and appreciation from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and their hopes for the success of the efforts aiming to restore peace and stability in Sudan.
He underscored the humanitarian crisis in Sudan due to ongoing military operations, resulting in civilian casualties, displacement, and shortages of basic resources like food and healthcare. He emphasised the importance of joining
efforts to end the suffering of millions of Sudanese.
The minister added that Arab leaders, during the 33rd Arab Summit (Bahrain Summit) held last month, asserted their solidarity with Sudan and urged conflicting parties to engage constructively with peace initiatives like the Jeddah Forum.
Dr. Al Zayani noted that the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan, signed in May 2023 following a joint effort by Saudi Arabia and the US, had created a moment of hope for Sudan. However, he said, the failure to comply with the declaration has caused the destructive war to persist, causing further harm to civilians and violations of international laws and principles.
The Foreign Affairs Minister emphasised the urgent need for immediate action to alleviate Sudan’s suffering, which encompasses proposing measures such as a humanitarian ceasefire during Eid Al Adha and urging conflicting parties to hold negotiations for a peaceful solution. This is in addition to mobilising regional and interna
tional support to reach a political solution, pressure all parties to end the fighting, implement economic and development initiatives in Sudan, and ensure the safe delivery of aid to alleviate the suffering of civilians. The minister also emphasised the need to call on the international community, including the Security Council, to issue a binding resolution to end the fighting, uphold international laws, support Sudanese refugees in neighouring countries and offer financial assistance to host nations.
The Bahraini delegation at the meeting included Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal, Bahrain’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League; Ambassador Talal Abdulsalam Al Ansari, Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Al Tarifi, Chief of Arab and African Affairs; and Ambassador Saeed Abdul Khaliq Saeed, Director of the Coordination and Follow-up Sector at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
