The Foundation for the Safeguarding of Rabat’s Cultural Heritage, chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, held a ceremony in Rabat on Friday to present the first issue of its magazine ‘Roya’, as part of the 29th edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL).

This 84-page issue presents the creations of schoolchildren in various genres of journalistic production (report, interview and portrait), literary production (poetry and storytelling) and artistic production (comic strip and photo), all revolving around the year’s theme: ‘Intangible heritage in Rabat’.

The publication of this magazine, the first of its kind in Morocco devoted to heritage and produced by young people aged 12 to 15, is part of the ‘Je découvre mon Patrimoine’ (I discover my heritage) educational program run by the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Rabat’s Cultural Heritage, which aims to raise awareness among school pupils and educational staff of the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

The Foundati
on has opted, in accordance with the guidelines of HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa, for the theme of intangible heritage as the main focus of this year for its program “Je découvre mon Patrimoine” dedicated to schoolchildren from Rabat, Sale and Temara, said Mouna Belbekri, head of educational programs at the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Rabat’s Cultural Heritage, in a speech on this occasion.

The Foundation, she explained, relies on cultural and artistic education to educate young people, considering learners as a productive element that contributes to the process of transmitting heritage between generations under the supervision of their teachers.

For his part, Éric Falt, director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) Office for the Maghreb in Morocco, praised the work carried out by the Foundation to serve and publicize this rich heritage, underlining the importance of the partnership between Unesco and the Foundation, which ‘enables the development of initiativ
es to preserve intangible heritage in Morocco and Africa’.
