Honduras Suspends Recognition of Pseudo “SADR” in Support of Moroccan Sahara

Rabat: The Republic of Honduras has officially decided to suspend its recognition of the pseudo “SADR,” a move communicated to Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, by Honduras’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mireya Agero de Corrales. This decision was conveyed through an official letter received on Wednesday, marking a significant diplomatic shift concerning the Moroccan Sahara issue.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the letter from Agero de Corrales highlighted that Honduras’s decision stems from its sovereign choice, aligned with its traditional commitment to principles such as non-interference and respect for the internal affairs of other states. This suspension of recognition is also a demonstration of Honduras’s full support for the efforts led by the UN Secretary-General and his Special Envoy, aimed at crafting a political, fair, and lasting solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue. Furthermore, Honduras expressed its backing of UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2797, reinforcing its stance on the matter.

Honduras, which initially recognized the pseudo “SADR” in 1989 and reaffirmed this position in 2022, has now joined a growing number of countries retracting such recognition. This latest development represents the sixth withdrawal of recognition in the past two years, reflecting the increasing momentum and international support for Morocco’s stance on the Sahara issue. The decision is part of a broader diplomatic effort led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, whose leadership continues to drive significant changes in international perceptions and policies regarding the region.
