Speaking on the occasion of the 51st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), the diplomat stressed that HM King Mohammed VI announced during the Throne Day important reforms regarding the status of women in the Kingdom, aimed at putting into action the constitutional institutions in charge of applying parity, and this, a few weeks after the review of Morocco’s report to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), on June 22, 2022.
In terms of promoting respect for human rights at regional and international levels, Morocco hosted on September 6-7, the Africa-Middle East Regional Forum on minority issues, which was an opportunity to measure the Kingdom’s commitment to minority rights, he noted.
In the same vein, the city of Marrakech will host, on December 7 and 8, an international conference bringing together several dozen national human rights mechanisms worldwide, and various other stakeholders, to exchange on the roles of these mechanisms, and explore ways to federate efforts to create a platform for networking, mutual learning and consultation for relevant responses to common challenges, the diplomat said.
Mr. Zniber congratulated, on behalf of the Moroccan delegation, Volker Türk for his appointment as High Commissioner for Human Rights, and assured him of the Kingdom’s support for his mandate.
Concerning the current session, the Moroccan delegation will continue to contribute energetically to promote many topics of interest to the Council, he added.
As a member of the Core Group, Morocco will contribute to the preparation of 10 draft resolutions, addressing, besides some country situations, the themes of education, development, transitional justice, youth, the role of prevention, safety of journalists and technical assistance, the diplomat noted.
Similarly, and in anticipation of the 41st session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Morocco is organizing, with other partners, a side-event on September 21 on “the contribution of local stakeholders in the drafting of UPR reports,” he concluded.
