In a collective punishment step, Israeli authorities notify of imminent demolition of Palestinian home near Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM: Israeli occupation authorities today notified a Palestinian family of the imminent demolition of their privately owned house in the town of Za'atara, east of Bethlehem, according to security sources. A security source told WAFA that Israeli forces stormed the town of Za'atara, raided the home of local resident, Issa Ali Zawahra, and handed him a demolition notice against his family home. Zawahra is the father of Mohammed and Kathem who were both shot by the occupation's live fire on the 22nd of last February at the Az-Za'ayyem Israeli military checkpoint to the east of Jerusalem which resulted in the killing of Mohammed and the critical injury and detention of Kathem. The family received an initial notice ordering the demolition of their home on May 7th as part of the collective punishment policy that Israel uses against Palestinians whom it accuses of carrying out attacks against Israelis; a policy that Israel does not use against Israeli settlers who were involved in fatal attacks against Pale stinians. Israel's punitive home demolition policy taken against Palestinians suspected of carrying attacks against Israelis violates international law. Al-Haq human rights group slammed the punitive home demolition of Palestinians suspected of being involved in attacks against Israelis as a collective punishment, affirming that it is assessed as a war crime and a crime against humanity under humanitarian law and human rights law. B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights group, says: 'The people who bear the brunt of the [punitive] demolitions are relatives - including women, the elderly, and children - whom Israel does not suspect of involvement in any offense.' 'The official objective of the house demolition policy is deterrence … yet the deterrent effect of house demolitions has never been proven.,' said B'Tselem. Amnesty International also stressed that 'collective punishment is never permissible under any circumstances.' Source: Palestine news & Information Agency – WAFA
