Amman:King Mohammed VI’s speech at the opening of the parliament outlined a fresh approach for cooperation on migration with European partners, positioning Morocco as a proactive contributor to new proposals.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the King’s assessment that the existing migration cooperation model is outdated shows a clear-sighted and responsible approach to ongoing crises and challenges. This includes issues like the political exploitation of migration and difficulties concerning the repatriation of unaccompanied minors and fake asylum seekers.
The King announced Morocco’s plans to present a strategic document to European partners, setting a clear vision for migration cooperation. This move signifies a shift from the traditional North-South model, where previously European countries took the lead in proposing solutions. Under the Sovereign’s leadership, Morocco is now reversing this trend by actively contributing ideas.
Jérôme Besnard, a French geopolitical expert and law professor at Paris Cité University, noted that Morocco’s approach is not just about highlighting current system shortcomings but also focuses on developing concrete solutions. These solutions emphasize co-development, economic competitiveness, and regional stability.
The initiative marks a significant change in North-South relations, as Morocco seeks to actively shape cooperation policies rather than merely accepting proposals from Europe. This reflects the Kingdom’s ambition for an equal partnership based on reciprocity and shared responsibility, avoiding electoral posturing and sterile controversies.
