Ministry of Sustainable Development holds SDG 5 Workshop on Gender Equality in partnership with UN Women


Manama, The Ministry of Sustainable Development, in partnership with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in the Kingdom of Bahrain and United Nations Women, held a workshop on calculating indicators for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on Gender Equality. This initiative highlights the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national statistical capabilities for the SDGs and reflects Bahrain’s commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and achieving its goals.

The workshop specifically addressed SDG 5’s indicators, explaining clear calculation methodologies and facilitating discussions between relevant stakeholders. It further focused on strengthening data monitoring and analysis, and aimed at developing robust national statistical capabilities to ensure accurate and periodic data collection and reporting on SDG 5, demonstrating Bahrain’s firm dedication to women’s empowerment.

The workshop included broad participation from both government and international organi
sations. Representatives from key government entities were present, including the Ministry of Finance and National Economy, Ministry of Shura and Representatives Councils’ Affairs, Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, Ministry of Health, Supreme Council for Women (SCW), Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Civil Service Bureau, Survey and Land Registration Bureau, and the General Organisation for Social Insurance (GOSI).

Enriching the discussions further were representatives from leading United Nations agencies such as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Representatives from UN Women commended Bahrain’s pioneering role in championing gender equality and women’s empowerment a
nd highlighted the Kingdom’s commitment in accelerating the progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly through robust data collection for SDG indicators submitted to international custodian agencies.

This workshop is part of a series of planned workshops for all seventeen Sustainable Development Goals in the coming period, aimed at enhancing mechanisms for monitoring, analysing, and exchanging data and information, and developing national statistical capacity to ensure the regular and accurate collection and monitoring of data related to Sustainable Development Goals.
