Rabat: The President of the Chile-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group, Mara Catalina Del Real Mihovilovic, reiterated on Tuesday in Rabat the Group’s support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this resolution enshrines the autonomy plan as ‘a lasting and serious solution’ to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, as stated by Del Real Mihovilovic following her meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita. Del Real Mihovilovic emphasized that the friendship group, which includes several political parties, fully supports this resolution.
She further mentioned that Morocco is regarded by her country as a gateway to Africa. Del Real Mihovilovic expressed hope that Chile could, in turn, serve as a platform for Morocco’s access to Latin America and the Pacific region. She highlighted the potential for economic complementarity between the two countries, particularly in the agricultural sector, noting the significance of Moroccan fertilizers for Chilean agriculture. Chile, being an exporter of strategic minerals such as copper and lithium, plays a crucial role in the automotive industry, which is seeing significant growth in Morocco.
The Chilean delegation also stressed the importance of establishing strategic partnerships with Morocco in various fields, including seawater desalination, technology, and tourism. Del Real Mihovilovic reflected on the timing of the Chilean parliamentary delegation’s visit to Morocco, which coincides with the 65th anniversary of the establishment of friendly relations between the two countries, as well as the 22nd anniversary of the visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to Chile. She emphasized that Chile’s foreign policy is “a State policy,” underscoring that the friendship with Morocco transcends political affiliations.
