Rabat: Niger has expressed its approval for the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Moroccan Sahara. This endorsement was conveyed by Bakary Yaou Sangar©, Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad, after discussions with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Conference on African Victims of Terrorism, held on December 2-3 in Rabat.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the conference provided a platform for the ministers to discuss matters of mutual concern, including the newly adopted UNSC resolution. The resolution is seen as a significant step in supporting Morocco’s proposed framework for autonomy in the disputed region, marking a notable development in the international stance on the issue.
The talks between Sangar© and Bourita underscored the importance of regional cooperation in addressing challenges and fostering peace. The support from Niger is expected to bolster Morocco’s diplomatic efforts in the region and further its objectives in the ongoing discussions surrounding the Moroccan Sahara.
