Rabat: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a substantial funding package of £270 million to modernize Morocco’s airport infrastructure. This initiative aims to enhance the competitiveness of Morocco’s air transport sector by upgrading its major airport platforms, increasing operational capacity, expanding the air navigation system, and reinforcing security mechanisms.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the program is designed to accommodate projected growth in passenger and cargo traffic by the year 2030, aligning with Morocco’s preparation to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The investments will include the installation of next-generation security equipment, automated baggage-handling systems, and modern mobility devices, all aimed at providing a smoother, safer, and more comfortable travel experience.
Achraf Hassan Tarsim, AfDB Country Office Manager in Morocco, emphasized the strategic priority of developing Morocco as a destination and strengthening its logistical competitiveness in preparation for the global event. The project will involve modernizing the airports of Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez, with expansions of terminals, the construction of a new control tower in Marrakech, and the development of extensive aircraft parking areas and taxiways.
Mike Salawou, Director of the AfDB Infrastructure and Urban Development Department, highlighted the project’s role in driving Morocco’s tourism momentum and modernizing its air logistics. The initiative’s focus on modernizing airport infrastructure is expected to deliver a safe, efficient travel experience that adheres to international standards.
The program integrates digitalization, fluidity, and comfort components to transform the travel experience in Morocco. By 2030, it is anticipated that the capacities of Morocco’s airports will significantly increase, accommodating 14 million passengers in Marrakech, 5 million in Agadir, 3.6 million in Tangier, and 3 million in Fez. These developments aim to further bolster Morocco’s position as a regional air hub, as concluded in the statement.
