Morocco Braces for Snowfall, Heavy Rain, Cold Spell in Days Ahead


Rabat: Under an orange-level alert, snowfall of 10 to 20 cm is expected on elevations above 1,700 meters on Saturday, from midnight until 6:00 p.m., in the provinces of Ifrane, Khenifra, Midelt, Taza, Sefrou, Boulemane, and Beni Mellal. On Sunday, heavier snowfall ranging from 15 to 35 cm is forecast above 1,500 meters, from midday until 11:00 p.m., in the same areas.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, during the same period, snow accumulations of 5 to 15 cm are expected in the provinces of Al Hoceima, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Al Haouz, Figuig, Jerada, Taourirt, and Guercif. The weather authority also forecast heavy rain, accompanied by occasional thundershowers, with accumulations of 35 to 60 mm on Sunday from midnight to 11:00 p.m. in Fahs-Anjra, Larache, Tanger-Assilah, Ouezzane, M’diq-Fnideq, Kenitra, Al Hoceima, and Chefchaouen.

Furthermore, rainfall of 25 to 35 mm is expected over the same period in Sidi Kacem, Driouch, Khemisset, Rabat, Salé, Skhirate-Temara, Meknes, Moulay Yacoub, Taza, and Sidi S
limane. In addition, a cold snap is forecast from Friday through Sunday in mountainous areas above 1,600 meters, with temperatures dropping to between -8°C and -4°C in the provinces of Boulemane, Ifrane, Midelt, Khenifra, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Chichaoua, the DGM added.
