Morocco Chairs Annual ASGAP Meeting in South Africa


Midrand:The Secretary-General of Morocco’s House of Representatives, who also presides over the Association of Secretaries-General of African Parliaments (ASGAP), is leading the 7th annual meeting of the association. This event is taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Pan-African Parliament headquarters in Midrand, South Africa.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the meeting aims to enhance cooperation and joint action among African parliamentary administrations. It is structured around three sub-themes. The first sub-theme, presented by El Khadi, addresses ‘The Role of the Secretary-General in 21st-Century Africa,’ focusing on challenges faced by secretaries-general amid digital transformation and modern governance.

The second sub-theme targets raising awareness of African Union treaties in line with the 2026 theme, ‘Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.’

The third sub-theme, ‘Artificial Intelligence and the Organization of Pa
rliamentary Work,’ explores the potential of AI to modernize legislative processes, enhance access to parliamentary data, and support research and decision-making in institutions.

Discussions include case studies from African and international parliaments, addressing the responsible adoption of AI technologies, data governance, cybersecurity, and bolstering the capacities of secretariats to effectively use these technologies.

The meeting is anticipated to foster a common understanding of AI’s role in parliamentary work, outline a shared vision for the evolving role of secretaries-general, and highlight the necessary competencies for the 21st century.
