Rabat: The Kingdom was elected to this UNESCO body by 146 votes atop the Arab group for a four-year term, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Morocco is followed by Jordan with 131 votes and Egypt with 114 votes, while Algeria and Sudan were eliminated from the ballot. Morocco’s election reflects the international community’s recognition of the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in favor of multilateralism, dialogue among civilizations, and sustainable human development.

It reinforces Morocco’s active and constructive role within UNESCO, as well as its ongoing commitment to promoting education, culture, science, and communication, which are essential pillars of peace and progress, the press release says. Under this new mandate, the Kingdom will further its efforts to strengthen international cooperation and defend the universal values of tolerance, mutual respect, and solidarity that underpin UNESCO’s mandate.

Composed of 58 member states, the UNESCO Executive Board acts under the authority of the General Conference. It examines the Organization’s work program and the corresponding budget estimates submitted to it by the Director-General of the UN agency.
