Morocco’s Authorities Proactively Mobilize to Address Extreme Weather

Rabat: Morocco’s public authorities have undertaken a comprehensive and proactive mobilization to address the exceptional weather situation, in close coordination with various departments and services, as announced by the spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, Rachid El Khalfi.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the initiative comes as part of a preventive strategy aimed at safeguarding lives and property amidst the floods affecting several regions of the Kingdom. The significant rise in water levels of rivers and streams has prompted authorities to engage in a total and anticipatory mobilization. This operation follows the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, ensuring extensive ground mobilization, including the deployment of Royal Armed Forces (FAR) units, in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior and other stakeholders.

The comprehensive response plan includes the evacuation of citizens from affected areas, with a total of 108,423 people being relocated. Specific evacu
ations were carried out in the provinces of Larache, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, and Kenitra. The operations were executed with a focus on minimizing threats and potential damage, providing necessary transportation, and setting up accommodation camps for those displaced.

The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that these preventive measures have been crucial in mitigating the situation’s impact and ensuring public safety. Authorities are also preparing for the anticipated consequences of further extreme weather, including potential rainfall of up to 150 mm, which could exacerbate conditions particularly around the Oued El Makhazine dam.

In response, the Ministry has urged residents in high-risk areas within Larache province to adhere strictly to evacuation instructions. This includes immediate evacuation from Ksar El Kebir, Souaken, Oulad Ouchih, the industrial zone of Larache, and areas near the mouth of Oued Loukkos.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to implementing all necessary actions to safeguard
the population and emphasized the importance of increased mobilization and cooperation between public authorities and the local population, who have demonstrated responsibility and awareness in facing these challenges.
